I'm From...

Hello Warriors!

I wanted to share a poem activity I did in a seminar that I thought could be a great tool for some identity exploration!

I AM FROM…an exercise for surfacing your identity.

I am from…hot, scorching Arizona sun, riding bikes and roller skates on the elementary school basketball court, Heritage Heights, and its big community pools (whichever had less bees).

I am from…polish holocaust survivor immigrant grandparents, escaping the gas chambers and rationing 1 slice of bread for an entire day while running a business and raising children with unkind hands and words. A hug at any time, “we are so proud of you” at every corner, tough love, and purple heart emojis stemming from Glitzy Grandma and her ability to make me feel like the most whole, beautiful person in the world.

I am from…simply raspberry lemonade, eggo muffin tops, mom’s famous pumpkin chocolate chip muffins, dad’s citrus infused latkes, lean cuisine mac and cheese, the smell of spray on sunscreen, and Grandma’s Juicy Couture perfume.

I am from…”Be the dog, not the sheep”, “We are a team”, “force of nature”, and “Krells don’t quit” from dad, “A B is a great grade”, “Be a leader, not a follower” and “harness that inner warrior” from mom.

I am from…Dynamite by Taio Cruz, Like a G6, Rocketeer, Ask.fm, EOS Lip Balms, Pitch Perfect, the coffee grinder, and Disney Channel.

I am from…The ALS Ice Bucket challenge, Sandy Hook, the Boston Marathon, graduating high school and starting college during the COVID-19 pandemic, and cancer taking those I love.

I am from…five high schools, daily abuse, eating lunch alone, getting escorted to all of my classes by police officers, no one believing me, and being told I was never going to be enough.

I am from…gaining my voice back after winning Miss Phoenix’s Outstanding Teen and the Difference Maker AZ Award, mentoring thousands of students in all 51 states with my organization, Kaycee’s Warriors and turning my life into something I’m proud of.
