Maintaining Sunshine Even When It's Cloudy

Hi Warriors!

Today’s topic is maintaining sunshine even when it’s cloudy. And no, I’m not talking about the literal sun and weather. I’m talking about remaining positive and bright-eyed even when there is so much negativity around us right now.

Something about me is that I really value human connection. I think a lot, especially about how others feel in this world. I am deeply emotional, sensitive, and introspective. I am nostalgic, dramatic, intentional, and expressive. I love to laugh but I know when to get serious. I am far from cynical. Overall, I am a glass half full kind of girl.

It’s hard to be such a “feeler” in a world that seems to scoff at those who care. It’s not cool to care right now. But that’s okay, because I’ve never been cool ;)

What do you do around people who are just downers? Believe me, I understand the world can be a dark place…especially in the current state of everything. It’s easy to be negative and complain, believe me, I am a chronic complainer! But sometimes it’s hard being around people who make you feel bad, either about yourself or about the world.

Here are my tips on how to navigate relationships with negative people:

  1. Healthy space! It’s okay to take space from people who drain your energy. Setting healthy boundaries is self care.

  2. Communicate your feelings. Telling someone a concern you have may even make your friendship stronger. The person may not even realize their negative tendencies and it could bring light to that. You have a right to share your feelings (in a respectful way of course)!

  3. Look at it with an empathy lens. Is this person going through something I am not aware of that contributes to their negative view of the world? Am I an anchor for this person to help them see things in a more positive light? How can I validate what they are going through?

  4. Practice self care! Being around someone who is negative all the time can take a toll on how you start to interpret the world as well. It’s not someone else’s job to ensure the messages they are communicating are always positive. However, it is your responsibility to regulate your own emotions and process your interactions!

I hope these tips help when it comes to difficult conversations and maintaining your sunshine when there might be some clouds looking.

I love ya, Warriors!
